Need help with noise

Postby 08rexgrl » Thu Jul 29, 2010 3:54 pm

So, we did a 6 speed swap, had to remove the axles in order to fit it in properly. Just got it put back together and now there is a noise coming from what we think is the front passengers side. Upon removal of the tire there seems to be nothing rubbing and we can't see any problems. Any ideas? Has anyone heard this noise before?

Did Mick bend the dust shield into the rotor?

Good question. I'll ask him about that. We are stumped with this.

Dust shields are not bent into the rotors. Is there a chance that the axles are not pressed into the trans all the way? I looked under there and there is about 1/8" space between the case of the trans and the axle. With the car up on stands and in 1st gear all 4 wheels spin so I wouldnt think its an issue the the axles not being pressed in all the way. The only time the car makes this noise is when the wheels are turned either way and the car is in motion either forward or reverse. Is there a chance the diff inside the trans is no good? Also, I know for fact that the trans fluid level right now is on the low side as I didnt want to over fill it initially until the car had a chance to spread gear oil throughout the entire gear box, then I was going to top it off. Could the lack of fluid in there right now be a cause?

Does the noise occur when you are turning the wheels while on jack stands?

Dont know yet. Im gonna find out today though. I also topped off the trans fluid to a proper level so Ill see if that makes any difference or not. Im seriously scared there is something wrong with this trans though after I just dropped a grip on the damn thing

The transmission might be fine if it does not make any noise while going straight. If it only happens while turning it has probably got to do with something in the steering components. Don't worry you will figure it out. It sucks though when this stuff happens.

Mickey when you have the car on jack stands see if the wheels wobble. Also see if you can move the wheels with your hand. Meaning push the top of the wheel in and pull the bottom of the wheel out. Trying to see if you have a bad wheel bearing.

you know my car made the same exact noise when curtis installed a new hub for me. it was the exact same noise and it actually caused some damage to my rotor. it had something to do with the brakes. i just remember him taking the caliper apart and switching things around and reinstalling. it was on my front driver's side. is this happening only on the passengers?

Yep. Only on the passengers side. We are going to attemp to get it pulled back apart on that side and recheck everything.

I wanted to send a personal thanks to all that offered ideas on what the problem could have been. I put the car back on stands this afternoon and after a bit of investigating I found the whole problem was my fault(as always!!). I found that the inside of the wheel was rubbing on the sway bar when the tires were turned hard right or left. When I took the broken trans out a few months back I disconnected the sway and obvioulst didnt pay attention to the orientation of the end link. When I put it back together the other day I had it set up in a more horizontal position as opposed to how it is supposed to be set up in a vertical manner which pulls the sway back towards the rear of the car thus getting it out of the way of the wheel when you turn hard right or left. Problem solved, Im an idiot!!!, car is back on the road!!! Thanks again everyone and please learn from my dumb mistake!!!!
